Boredom
" Boredom is the all - pervasive fear that haunts us and to escape it, we worship novelty and change and fritters away our lives in their pursuit" - John Jameson
When i came across this article, i find it being so true in today's world. Boredom is the new illness, most commonly seen among us today. Sadly, it is not an illness that the GPs can prescribe you medication and make you and your life interesting again. Novelty is derived from Latin word novem for "new" and it means to seek new quality of life while change is to make different. From a positive light, novelty and change is something that is much needed to seek innovation and encourage creativity. Take education as an example. It is reported that some neighbourhood schools in Singapore such as South View Primay school students are all required to learn how to cook and bake ( WOW) and also to pick up a dance, ranging from modern, hip hop.jazz, malay, chinese& indian dance for their 6 years stay there. ( pretty interesting huh!) this innovation rises due to the boring pri school routine time table and ccas. such changes are good and there should be more to come! However, John Jameson seems to view boredom from a negative perspective as it "haunts us to escape it" and "fritters" our lives away. Let's see, when you are bored what do you do? i will Facebook i will blog i will watch shows i will exercise i will start ringing all my buddies for a gathering ok once in a blue moon, i will start to think of how to improve my work in mere future to come. Oh how can i forget that i will sleep my time away? sleep is luxurious okay! Guess those above are the common activities we will engage ourselves into when we are bored. It is still healthy if you decide to kick boredom away by pursuding some changes to your routine. However, things become darker if you have embrace boredom and level it up to depression, which is happening around us. The number of people who commit sucide is even more than people who died in car accidents. In the case of Singapore, we don't have many natural places that we can go for a zen retreat. Our seas are murky and there are no snorkelling/diving that we can go to transcend into another world. We could only pay $8.50 for a pair of 3D movie tickets (provided you have found some nice bunch of friends who are willing to watch with you) to take you to a fantasy world. How long can u substain your mental health leading such lifestyle? chasing boredom away with material activities... Thus, there is a need to see life further, deeper by reflecting upon yourself. Before asking a question on why your life is like that, hopping that someone can tell you the answers to chase away boredom, ask yourself why are you bored? There must be things for you to do, people for you to show love and care to, time that can be spend better in pursuding a dream, or a passion in your life. Are you procastinating to a better living? great things can start with boredom. Albert Einstein produced much of his remarkable in his spare time ( Oh by the way , he is a vegetarian =) So instead of frittering your life away in the pursuit of change n novelty due to boredom by FB-ing ( people who spend like 12 hrs on FB may have higher risk of depression!) why not try out something new? Volunteer or take up new and cheap hobbies. Be Social! Here is a little chance tmr: Blood donation at Bt Merah Tien Hui temple 28 November 9am to 3pm! ( I will be there at 12pm onwards!)
