Welcome to Italy- Rome
Let's us now fly to Italy next! the weather is much warmer with lots of sun! So imagine how happy i was ! after freezing my butt off at like negative degrees Waited for 1 hour to collect our luggage. thank god for Singapore's efficiency. i won't want to go through that again. Hungry, Tired, Worried and Grumpy was our feelings then. The streets of Rome Our super doggy hotel " lobby" . but it was'nt that bad after all. Lunch! So famish after a long morning and night! pizzas are really cheap going at 5 euros for a huge slides. The subway (MRT) Now the arty farty rome ( who ever say that it is romantic?) and we are going to....... COLOSSEUM! Capable of seating 50,000 spectators the Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. As well as the gladiatorial games, other public spectacles were held there, such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era. It was later reused for such purposes as housing, workshops, quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian shrine. It has been estimated that about 500,000 people and over a million wild animals died in the Colosseum games. {wikipedia} Late Princess Diana did pose a post here. or almost here. so i was trying to do the same. but i was so shack! The outlay of the colosseum On our way to the prestige Palatine Hill and why it is prestige is because According to Roman mythology, the Palatine Hill was the location of the cave, known as the Lupercal, where Romulus and Remus were found by the she-wolf that kept them alive. According to this legend, the shepherd Faustulus found the infants, and with his wife Acca Larentia raised the children. When they were older, the boys killed their great-uncle (who seized the throne from their father), and they both decided to build a new city of their own on the banks of the River Tiber. Suddenly, they had a violent argument with each other and in the end Romulus killed his twin brother Remus. This is how "Rome" got its name - from Romulus. Another legend to occur on the Palatine is Hercules' defeat of Cacus after the monster had stolen some cattle. Hercules struck Cacus with his characteristic club so hard that it formed a cleft on the southeast corner of the hill, where later a staircase bearing the name of Cacus was constructed. {wikipedia} In short, it is the place where the city ROME was born The dusk of a warm nice day. The once beautiful courtyard. Ancient Romans actually indulge in sinful acts eg: eat and drink to the fullest and then vomit outside and continue to gorge themselves in food again. my favourite" sit on the grass" shot. A small part of the ruin city. Those are marbles floor. Many of these marbles are being reused to built the Pantheon. (coming right up next) A step into the acient ruins and legends. Flocks of birds in the dusk. Majestic buildings in the ancient city the gate of the Palatine hill Christmas market. well according to the tour guide, this is suppose to be Rome's low tourist season. but judging from the picture, i wont want to be part of their high season. this is because it is the smallest independent state in the world. Yes, it is another country. As of 31 December 2005, there were, apart from the Pope himself, 557 people with Vatican citizenship, while there were 246 residents in the state who did not have its citizenship. And there are only 3 ways to get into the state, via the Vatican museum, by a passport control gate or via Saint Peter's Square. One of our favourite art work in the museum Nicely mosiac floors How did the ancient people draw a geography map of the world? With accuracy somemore! The Sistine chaple, with Michaelangelo's famous art work " The Last Supper". No photography was allowed in the chapel as they observe slience and copyrights. So we took this board for you guys to see! Where the Pope delivers his blessings to the world- Saint Peter's Square. My constipated face as i was trying to be in Vatican City and Rome. And Vatican city is surrounded by such huge walls! Around the whole city. We took tons and tons of pictures in the city itself ( it is the Only rare chance to cover 2 states in a city) but blogger is too slow to upload all! so i had choosen the highlights of it to show here. come to my house and i shall show you all the wonderful paintings and scruptures we seen in Vatican Museum! ************************************************************** Which citizens do we speak/ encounter the most in ROME? Japanese and PRCs. It puzzles us. Do you know of any correlation aside from the search for christainity and catholism. Rome enriched my european history, which i have zero of it in the first place. PS: look out for the freerome tour at the Spanish Steps station for FREE 2 hours tour! We enjoyed it tons. =) |
